چکیده

It remains a challenge to simultaneously remove geometric distortion and space-time-varying blur in frames captured through a turbulent atmospheric medium. To solve, or at least reduce these effects, we propose a new scheme to recover a latent image from observed frames by integrating a new variational model and distortion-driven spatialtemporal kernel regression. The proposed scheme first constructs a high-quality reference image from the observed frames using low-rank decomposition. Then, to generate an improved registered sequence, the reference image is iteratively optimized using a variational model containing a new spatial-temporal regularization. The proposed fast algorithm efficiently solves this model without the use of partial differential equations (PDEs). Next, to reduce blur variation, distortion-driven spatial-temporal kernel regression is carried out to fuse the registered sequence into one image by introducing the concept of the near-stationary patch. Applying a blind deconvolution algorithm to the fused image produces the final output. Extensive experimental testing shows, both qualitatively and quantitatively, that the proposed method can effectively alleviate distortion and blur and recover details of the original scene compared to state-of-the-art methods.

A Variational Approach to Calibration of Multiple Cameras

This report addresses the problem of calibrating camera parameters such as lens distortion and color scaling using variational methods. We have presented multi-view stereo techniques based on variational ideas to (i) evolve pose parameters of a 3D model object to take advantage of the known shape of calibration objects, and to reduce computational complexity, (ii) evolve distortion parameters o...

Variational Multiscale Residual-driven Turbulence Modeling for Large Eddy Simulation of Incompressible Flow

The objectives of recent variational multiscale work in turbulence have been to capture all scales consistently and to avoid use of eddy viscosities altogether. This holds the promise of more accurate and efficient LES procedures. In this work, we describe a new variational multiscale formulation, which makes considerable progress toward these goals.

Turbulence stabilization

We recently developed a new approach to get a stabilized image from a sequence of frames acquired through atmospheric turbulence. The goal of this algorihtm is to remove the geometric distortions due by the atmosphere movements. This method is based on a variational formulation and is efficiently solved by the use of Bregman iterations and the operator splitting method. In this paper we propose...

Oscillatory Zonal Flows Driven by Interaction between Energetic Ions and Fishbone-like Instability in CHS

Nonlinear evolution of magneto-hydro-dynamic (MHD) oscillatory phenomenon driven by the interaction with energetic particles has been studied in CHS using twin heavy ion beam probes. The measurements have provided the fine observation of internal structure of plasma quantities, such as electric field, density and magnetic field distortion during a cycle of the MHD phenomenon. The finding of a n...

The multiscale formulation of large eddy simulation: Decay of homogeneous isotropic turbulence

The variational multiscale method is applied to the large eddy simulation ~LES! of homogeneous, isotropic flows and compared with the classical Smagorinsky model, the dynamic Smagorinsky model, and direct numerical simulation ~DNS! data. Overall, the multiscale method is in better agreement with the DNS data than both the Smagorinsky model and the dynamic Smagorinsky model. The results are some...
